Child Sex Trafficking Session for TACFS Members

Please Attend a Conversation about Child Sex Trafficking with Kim Grabert on Tuesday, Feb 20th 9:30am-12:30pm, at Lifeworks (835 N Pleasant Valley Road, Austin)

With a flurry of information, data and trainings coming our way about child sex trafficking, we hope you'll mark your calendars for Tuesday, Feb 20th 9:30am- 12:30pm for a conversation with TACFS and Kim Grabert, DFPS Director of Human Trafficking and Child Exploitation. Many of you have met Kim or heard from her at our annual conference. We are partnering to host a conversation about where we are as a state with regard to serving victims of child sex trafficking. Recognizing that TACFS members are position to best serve these victims - or are already serving these children and youth - Kim will facilitate a dialogue about current services, opportunities for partnership and growth, and what barriers we see. This will be an informal, candid dialogue - tailored to TACFS - where we can provide information and hear from Kim about what DFPS is working on in this realm. A very special thank you to Lifeworks for having us in their space located at: 835 N Pleasant Valley Road, Austin, TX. Please join us and share this with any members of your team who is interested. Please RSVP to kolse@tacfs.org.

    • March 08, 2018
    • 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
    • Presbyterian Children's Homes and Services, 5920 West. William Cannon Drive, Bldf 3, Ste 100, Austin

Please join the TACFS Community Based Care (CBC) Caucus!  Our first meeting will be on March 8th, 10:00am-2:00pm, in Austin (5920 W William Cannon Drive, Bldg 3, Ste 100)

TACFS is a resource for state policy-makers and we want to represent our members in informing the roll-out of CBC. TACFS is creating a caucus of our members interested in CBC and how it will impact our work around the State. Senate Bill 11 directs the continued roll-out of CBC, but there is much to be determined. As leaders in direct services for children and families, TACFS members have an opportunity to come together to identify common issues, opportunities, expectations, and recommendations around CBC.

As experts in direct service delivery, we need your participation in the caucus so that we can help shape a future system of care that works best for our children and families in our communities. Please join this caucus so we can inform the planning and roll-out of CBC in Texas!

A special thank you to Randy Spencer (Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services) and Scott Lundy (Arrow Child & Family Ministries) for Co-Chairing this Caucus.

    RSVP to: kolse@tacfs.org.

The Children’s Shelter to Host Inaugural South Texas Trauma-Informed Care Conference

Internationally-Renowned Trauma Expert, Dr. Bruce Perry to headline conference

San Antonio, Texas, January 9, 2018 – The Children’s Shelter will host the inaugural South Texas Trauma-Informed Care Conference on Thursday, May 10 and Friday, May 11, 2018 at the St. Anthony Hotel. The STX TIC CON will convene internationally renowned trauma expert, Dr. Bruce Perry, a Senior Fellow of The Child Trauma Academy, a not-for-profit organization based in Houston, and adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago.  Dr. Perry is the author, with Maia Szalavitz, of The Boy Who Was Raised As A Dog, a bestselling book based on his work with maltreated children and Born For Love: Why Empathy is Essential and Endangered. Dr. Perry will present on Thursday, May 10 from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM on “The Impact of Trauma and Neglect on the Developing Child.”

On Friday, May 11, trauma experts from across Texas and the United States will provide an array of advanced workshops to build a multi-disciplinary network of Trauma-Informed Care in South Texas. Conference presenters include, but are not limited to Dr. Joe Hendershott, author of Reaching the Wounded Student, Lori Beyer with Community Connections in Washington, D.C., Sarah Mercado with the Texas Christian University Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development, Dr. Susana Rivera, a psychologist from Laredo who specializes in trauma and border issues, Dr. Brigitte Bailey with the UT Health San Antonio Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Dr. Jeannie Von Stultz with the Bexar County Juvenile Probation Department, who will discuss the effects of trauma on the adolescent brain, and Trauma-Informed Care initiatives at the Juvenile Probation Department.

“The South Texas Trauma-Informed Care Conference is important for San Antonio, because the Alamo City has one of the highest child abuse/neglect and domestic violence rates in the state. It is critical that all in our community who encounter children who have been affected by trauma—whether those providers be counselors, teachers, mental health professionals, or medical personnel—have state-of-the-art knowledge of how trauma affects us and how to best help children who have experienced trauma,” states Diana Ochoa-Johnson, Chief Clinical Officer at The Children’s Shelter. “Trauma-Informed Care is based on an understanding of how trauma affects development, and what special supports and interventions help children heal from trauma. Trauma-Informed practices are strengths-based, and intended to not re-traumatize.  Rather, they help to create physical and emotional safety, re-establish a sense of control, and empower the child,” states Ochoa-Johnson.

Conference registration is open and is at www.childrensshelter.org/tic-conf
